Helen Thomas is the dean of the White House press corps. The recipient of more than forty honorary degrees, she was honored in 1998 with the inaugural Helen Thomas Lifetime Achievement Award, established by the White House Correspondents' Association. The author of Thanks for the Memories, Mr. President; Front Row at the White House; and Dateline: White House, she lives in Washington, D.C., where she writes a syndicated column for Hearst.

Quite a week for President Barack Obama, this year's Nobel Peace Prize laureate! Not everyone believes that Obama should have won. I have no idea what veteran White House Press Corps journalist Helen Thomas's view on that subject is, but I do know this: She would not for one second allow any prize to go to any president's head. She would give her congratulations and then ask "What are you going to do with this newfound fame to help the American people?"

Hi everyone! Many apologies to Helen Thomas and Craig Crawford, authors of "Listen Up, Mr. President!" (Scribner) -- we had some technical difficulties last week that for once were not due to my ineptitude.
There's no ineptitude when it comes to Helen Thomas, who at 89 has led the White House Press Corps through numerous administrations -- and spoken truth to all of them. (You'll hear, during the interview, how her tenacity affected George Stephanopoulos.) The day we taped happened to be the day President Obama was giving his "school speech," and before we started, I asked Thomas what she thought of the speech's naysayers. She immediately cocked her head and said "What kind of knucklehead would object to our nation's president speaking to students about staying in school and getting an education?"
