A native New Yorker, Michael Greenberg is a columnist for the Times Literary Supplement (London), where his wide-ranging essays have been appearing since 2003. His fiction, criticism, and travel pieces have been published in such varied places as O, The Oprah Magazine, Bomb, The Village Voice, and The New York Review of Books. He lives in New York with his wife and son.

In reading Michael Greenberg's "Beg, Borrow, Steal: A Writer's Life," I was struck by how much the author has struggled to make a literary life for himself: how intellectually bleak his upbringing ("I grew up in a house with no books," he says) was, how financially difficult his early years were.
Yet in person, Greenberg is anything but bleak. His energy and spirit are so joyful and arresting that I wanted to talk with him all afternoon, to hear about all of his adventures and his planned books. During our interview, we talk about the "drop of blood" his editor at the Times Literary Supplement (where all of these pieces first appeared, in the "Freelance" column) asked that he shed in writing each one.

We've been doing a lot of "bundled" giveaways lately, and everyone seems to love them -- but this week we decided to spotlight just one title, because it's so good -- and we think all readers (including writers!) will want to know about it.
Michael Greenberg, author of the acclaimed 2008 "Hurry Down Sunshine: A Father's Story of Love and Madness," writes a column for the Times Literary Supplement called "A Writer's Life." The best of that column is collected in Greenberg's new book, "Beg, Borrow, Steal: A Writer's Life." This isn't, however, a book just for writers.
