Ruth Reichl is the editor in chief of Gourmet and the author of three bestselling memoirs, Comfort Me with Apples, Tender at the Bone, and Garlic & Sapphires, and was the editor for the comprehensive Gourmet Cookbook. She has been the restaurant critic of The New York Times and the food editor and restaurant critic at the Los Angeles Times.

Giveaway: Memoirs, with a Bonus Question

I've said it before, but it bears repeating in this post: I'm very, very wary of and picky about memoirs. I don't read many of them, because I think many of them are unnecessary and self-indulgent -- not to mention, in recent days, simply fraudulent. 

I tell you that so you will know when I recommend a memoir, I don't guarantee that you'll love (there's no accounting for taste, and I have been wrong on occasion -- make that many occasions), but I will guarantee that I loved it and highly recommend it. 

Each of the three books in this giveaway fits my personal set of criteria for memoir: One, it is as truthful and honest as possible. Two, the book has a point (you'd be amazed at the number of memoirs I've read that are meandering accounts of "My Adventurous OR Wretched OR Important Life"). Third, that point is meaningful to other people besides the author.

A Conversation with Ruth Reichl

As I told Ruth Reichl during a pause in our taping, most interviewers (all?) have an ultimate "get:" That person or personage they'd most like to speak with. Today, for example, it might be President Obama for Rachel Maddow, or Bernard Henri Levy for Charlie Rose (joking, but just a little bit) -- and for people like me who interview authors, it's often the elusive and aloof J.K. Rowling.
