Zoë Heller was born in London in 1965 and educated at Oxford University and Columbia University, New York. After writing book reviews for several newspapers she became a feature writer for the Independent and a columnist for the Sunday Times. She now writes for the Daily Telegraph, having been awarded the title “Columnist of the Year” for 2002. She has also been a contributor to several magazines.
As a novelist, before writing The Believers, she published Everything You Know (2000) and Notes on a Scandal (2003), which was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize for fiction and was made into a feature film starring Cate Blanchett and Dame Judi Dench.

Choosing my Top Ten books of the year has been agonizing. I wish I had an office full of colleagues to argue with, but for this year at least the list is all my responsibility.
You'll note that many of these books appeared on The Book Studio in one way or another. For some, I conducted interviews with the authors; for others, I wrote reviews. That is not deliberate deck-stacking; it's a function of the fact that I try very hard to choose books that I believe will be strong -- but also books that intrigue me and that I want to read.

Regular viewers of our videos may notice that this one looks a tiny bit different; due to schedules, we had to tape my interview with Zoe Heller out of our regular studio. I'm mentioning that right up front because it shows how badly I wanted to interview Heller, whose most recent novel "The Believers" was front-and-center at this year's DCJCC Jewish Literary Festival.
If you've never read Heller's work, you may have seen it on screen: "Notes on a Scandal" was an acclaimed film starring Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett, adapted from Heller's "What Was She Thinking? Notes on a Scandal."
