A Conversation with James Brown

Image of Role of a Lifetime: Reflections on Faith, Family, and Significant Living

No, not that James Brown -- this James Brown.

Of course, as my husband will tell you, it's amazing that I know who either James Brown is. My knowledge of popular music is severely limited by my penchant for medieval polyphony, and my knowledge of sports could fit into a thimble. What can I tell you? I spend most of my time reading! (And a good thing, too, or I wouldn't have this job.)

This James Brown has to be the kindest, warmest, best-mannered gentleman I've ever met, let alone interviewed. His new book, "Role of a Lifetime: Reflections on Faith, Family and Significant Living," helps explain how he became that gentleman. Yes, the book is published by FaithWords, an imprint of Hachette Book Group, and yes, the faith to which Brown refers is Christianity -- yet this is by no means a book just for Christians, or a book about religion. It's a book about living into your destiny, from a man who was raised to believe in the value of things like hard work, honesty, and compassion.

I've been throwing teasers into a lot of my recent blog posts for interviews. I won't with this one. I just hope you watch it to hear a man who has made his way to the top -- a rich, satisfying, life -- by being a good sport and a team player.
