Giveaway: Friday Reads Challenge!

If you're reading this, you may be a #FridayReads regular on Twitter -- or you may just be wondering what the heck a #FridayReads is.

Let me explain: #FridayReads is a "hashtag," an identifying hack that allows people to search for all related responses quickly and easily within Twitter. All that "#FridayReads" means is that a tweet contains the answer to my question "What are you reading this Friday?" I started asking last fall, and I quickly realized that the answers I was receiving were so interesting and diverse that I wanted to add them to The Book Studio.

#FridayReads has been growing -- and I want it to keep growing. Last week we made it to nearly 350 participants, and more than twice as many comments! I particularly love it when people start chatting about answers...

Today I'm issuing a challenge to the Twitterverse to get us to 500 participants. Tell a friend! Share with a list! Put it out on Facebook! If we do reach 500 separate people commenting by midnight Eastern (U.S.) time, I'll enter each person into a random giveaway for a package of TEN brand-spanking-new hardcover books. Yes, you are eligible if you live outside of the U.S. -- I'll spring for the postage myself if you win!

I believe that we can make #FridayReads a phenomenon that helps readers show authors and publishers the kinds of books they're passionate about, regardless of whether those books are frontlist or backlist. I hope you'll agree, and I can't wait to see what YOU are reading this week.

I'm reading The Choir Boats

I'm reading The Choir Boats by Daniel Rabuzzi.  I love 18th & 19th century literature, as well as fantasy/sci-fi, and this book beautifully combines both.  It has the richness of language that I crave and vivid characters that I really care about, not to mention voyages and sea monsters, a key that unlocks doors in misplaced worlds, and adventure galore.

Fans of Philip Pullman (The Golden Compass), Susanna Clarke (Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell) or Ursula LeGuin will be enchanted.

"At Day's Close: Night in Times Past"

I'm reading about how the fact of night was treated by European cultures before artificial lighting. Nonfiction but great--reminds why there are so many mythical creatures keyed into the moon. It's by Roger Ekirch.

I'm feeling memoirish

I'm reading Mary Karr's "Lit" - so good. As good as The Liar's Club. Better (IMHO) than Cherry.

I don't know if this counts

I don't know if this counts toward your goal, but I'm not on Twitter, so it's the best I can do.

I'm reading the new John Irving novel, "Last Night at Twisted River."  So far, I'm not all that impressed.  I hope it gets better.  I'm only about 25 pages in.  He is my favorite novelist, so I'll stick with it no matter what happens!
