Giveaway: Women Writers, Twitter Friends

How can you resist this giveaway? Not only are you going to receive four fantastic reads -- you're going to be supporting four fantastic women writers. What do they have in common? Well, each of them has come down from New York City to be interviewed on The Book Studio (you'll see the finished clips with Hyatt Bass and Amy Sohn below; our interviews with Kaylie Jones and Julie Klam will air soon). But there's something else, too...

Each of these women writers is someone I got to know on Twitter. I knew their work already, and had read books by Jones and Sohn, but I hadn't interviewed any of them. When I joined the social media site back in February, I began using it to reach out to the usual suspects: People in publishing and...authors! I was surprised and delighted to see how many authors were already "Twitterate."

I won't go on and one about my stories of chatting with each of these talented authors on Twitter, but I do want you to know how proud I am to have featured their work here -- and how proud I am to have them on my Twitter friends list. In honor of them, this week's giveaway question (which will make you eligible for a random drawing for ten of these four-book bundles) is:

If you could meet any woman writer, who would it be?

The books included in this giveaway are: "The Embers" by Hyatt Bass, "You Were Always Mom's Favorite" by Deborah Tannen, "Prospect Park West" by Amy Sohn and "Please Excuse My Daughter" by Julie Klam.

This giveaway has ended. Congratulations to the winners:

Women Writers

I'd love to meet Barbara Kingsolver -- have been tempted more than once to try to find the farm in SW Virginia where they live!  Her books have really made me think, and have also made me laugh, and given me joy.  What else is there?

IF I could meet any woman writer

This is such a hard question! It would be a four-way tie between Anne Lamott, Dorothy Allison, Ann Hood, and Mary Karr. All four women are strong writers who tell their experiences with a brillance that's hard to find in memoirs.

Joan Didion. Her honesty on

Joan Didion. Her honesty on the page is breathtaking. Erma Bombeck I'd like to thank her for all the laughs.

 #

I would want to meet . . .

Anne Lamott.  In fact, she spoke not far from us and I didn't take the time to go, then I read one of her Salon columns, in which she said she'd never return (because of our heat and humidity).  I'm still kicking myself for not going.

 #

I would like to meet

Ann Brashares, JK Rowling, Sarah Dessen, Libba Bray, or Cassandra Clare. It would be great to meet all of them.

I'm fascinated by all things Asian.  I'd like to meet Pearl Buck whose books I started reading as a pre-teen and loved.  More realistically--Gail Tsukiyama whose prose is so poetic!

Deceased: Jane Austen so we could discuss the addition of zombies to 'Pride & Prejudice.'

Living:

Amy Tan because she has the 'best quality heart.'

Liza Palmer: she is a woman's fiction author who's characters feel like friends. She once called me awesome via Twitter. :)

JK Rowling broke all the rules so I'd like to get a cup of tea with her.

I'd meet Madeleine L'Engle

I'm sorry I'll never get a chance to meet  Madeleine L'Engle, at least not in this life.  She seemed like a genuinely nice person with amazing ideas.

 #

So many!

Jane Austen, J.K. Rowling, Ursula LeGuin, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Any of the Brontes -- There are so many great female authors, living and not living. What a great giveaway!

If you could meet any woman writer, who would it be?

I would love to meet Margaret Atwood or Laura Ingalls Wilder...both authors who made me want to pick up more books and keep reading!

 #

favorite woman author to meet

I feel quite priviledged to actually have met Marilynn Robinson twice! Once at the National Museum of  Women in the Arts for a reading of her book Gilead, and second at the National Mall for an author's breakfast at the Washington Post where she highlighted, Home.

Yes, I agree, her author "voice" really does match her actual one: soft, reserved, measured and even sacred.  She exudes what she writes in a very stately, scholarly way.  This makes the old adage, " write what you know" seem even more plausible.

To make a list of those authors I would love to meet, I would echo those others in citing:  Emily Dickenson, Margaret Atwood, Joyce Carol Oates, Ann Rynd and Joan Didion.

I'd love to meet...

Amy Tan! I'd love to meet one of the most successful Asian women writers!

I can think of a lot of women

I can think of a lot of women authors I'd like to meet, but I'm going to go with Barbara Kingsolver.  I love her books and her passion.

 #

Authoress-- is that a word?

There are so many wonderful women writers as well as men who write about women in beatiful prose. However, my first would be Ann Pachett for Bel Canto.

 #

Female Author

I recently read We Were the Mulvaneys by Joyce Carole Oates.  I'd like to meet her and learn more about her writing process.

 #

Hard to choose but....

Louisa May Alcott, I have some questions for her.....

 #

Anne Lamott

Is Anne Lamott as funny in person as she comes across in her books? Her "Operating Instructions" got me through an emotional pregnancy, laughing. For that I am so grateful. Can someone be so spiritual and yet so down-to-earth? I have so many questions...

 #

any woman writer

It would be awesome to be able to meet Jane Austen.  Her books are some of my favorites. Her writing is timeless and there is no modern author male or female who compares.

 #

Too many to name but a couple would be Jane Austen, Dawn Powell, Barbara Pym, Stevie Smith and Anne Sexton.

 #

Carson McCullers. There's

Who?

Mine would have to be Dorothy Parker... I can't imagine being in the same room as that much raw wit.

 #

Woman writer I'd like to meet

It's a toss-up: Either Marilynne Robinson, or Geraldine Brooks. I'd like to ask Marilynne Robinson how she went about so fully and authentically evoking the voice and persona of a male septuagenarian minister in Gilead. And I'd ask Geraldine Brooks whether she felt any trepidation about adopting the voice and story of character from such a well-known and beloved classic as Little Women (in March).

A woman writer who I would appreciate meeting and whose books have captivated me is Santa Montefiore.

If I could meet a woman writer...

I'd pick Ayn Rand to meet.  As a teenager, I discovered The Foutainhead and then had to get my hands on Atlas Shrugged and We the Living.  I admired the ideas and imagery that Rand was able to provoke, even if today I don't subscribe to her philosophy/ideology.  She was a very talented writer.

 #

The woman writer I'd like to meet is...

Celestine Vaite, who wrote this great series of novels about Tahiti. I read them over three consecutive summers and they were so fun, and laid-back, and interesting. I would love to meet her!

Women writers

If I could meet a woman writer, it would be Ruth Reichl. I recently read her latest book, Not Becoming My Mother:And Other Things She Taught Me Along The Way. It was a lovely exploration of her mother's life. It really made me think about mother-daughter relationships.

Meeting a woman writer

Oh, my - so many to choose from.  Do I want the ones that make me think, or smile, or cry?  Do I want the ones that do all of that?  Do I want the ones that make me love more and understand people better?  Do I want the women whose books I read to my sons as they were growing up?  There are so many and there are so many things that women writers do for us.  I have enjoyed reading the Tweets of so many women authors the past few months.

If I had to pick just one (and one whoIhave not yet met and do not follow on Twitter), I would choose (ooooohhh This is so difficult) either Alice Munro or Alice Hoffman.

Thanks Bethanne!  Love yourTweets!

Tricia
