Gwen Ifill finished her new book about politics and race in the United States before the 2008 presidential election had been won. But it wouldn't have mattered if Barack Obama hadn't won; her book would still be relevant, because it's about what his rise to the candidacy signifies. His win was further confirmation, for Ifill, that a "breakthrough" has occurred (for more on what Ifill has to say, watch our interview with her, below.)
