Friday Reads: Did We Make It?

Yesterday I challenged everyone who participates regularly in #FridayReads to help get the word out so that we could have 500 unique commenters. My promise was that if we got to that number I'd give one lucky, random, commenter a bundle of 10 brand-spanking-new hardcover books.

Did we make it?

YES WE DID! We scraped by with 503 separate commenters. Many of you left multiple comments, but I was only counting each person once.

We're currently compiling a list of names to put into Random.org and determine the book bundle winner, so look for a new announcement about that this weekend.

Thank you, everyone! Not only did you support Friday Reads, you supported reading -- and we've got a couple of surprises about Friday Reads coming up, too.

Twitter Book Club: Reminder

Greetings, Twitter Book Club readers, fans, and participants!

REMINDER: September's Twitter Book Club will be taking place on Monday, September 28th, 2009 at 9:00 p.m. ET, so this is your last weekend to read this month's pick, A Gate at the Stairs by Lorrie Moore.  We will be using the hashtag #tbc, so make sure to participate, or just follow along if you haven't had a chance to read it!

Additionally, please remember to leave your questions for Lorrie on this post - the answers will be tweeted during Monday night's book discussion.  By doing so, you will be entered to win a copy of November's pick, which will be Alive in Necropolis by Doug Dorst.

October's Twitter Book Club is scheduled for Monday, October 26 and our book pick is The Believers by Zoe Heller.

Twitter Book Club: Important Announcements!

Greetings, Twitter Book Club readers, fans, and participants. I have two important announcements this morning:

1. September's Twitter Book Club meeting will take place on Monday, September 28th, 2009 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time. I apologize for the late date change and blame New York City, where I am this week having many bookish meetings. Also, quite a few of our giveaway winners have just received their Moore books, so this will give everyone a week to catch up on their reading.

2. Our September author, Lorrie Moore, cannot be with us live (on either date -- it's not due to the date change that she won't be joining us), but she has graciously offered to answer reader questions in advance.

SO:

What is Twitter Book Club?

Olive Kitteridge: Fiction

If you're reading this, that does not mean you have any idea what Twitter Book Club is, let alone Twitter. You may have come to this post via Google, during your regular (I can dream) reading of The Book Studio, or even because someone sent you a link. So today I've decided to write two posts: First, a post explaining what Twitter Book Club is and second, a post explaining why our August 10th Twitter Book Club is an event you'll want to put on your calendar.

Ready? OK, maybe you still aren't. But here we go, anyway...

Twitter (http://www.twitter.com) is a social-media website that allows people to post short "status updates" to their followers. The updates are limited to 140 characters (NOT words; characters), and can include links to other web pages, links to photos, and even music files. In other words, Twitter is not simply a place where people talk about what kind of sandwich might be good for lunch today.

Why Blogs Aren't Dead, Part One

Yes, according to various pundits, blogs are So 2005. Or even So Over. I say nay. I don't think  blogs are dead, but blogs are changing -- just like everything else in the media.

"Like Peanut Butter and Chocolate" -- The Kindle 2.0 and Books?

Jeff Bezos, unveiled the Kindle 2.0 this morning at the Morgan Library in Manhattan (just in case you didn't get the connection, the Morgan holds one of the most important collections of "incunabula," as academicians refer to the earl

iest printed books), said that the Kindle and books were not mutually exclusive, "and when you put them together, you've got a new, tasty treat." But what happens when the peanut butter goes bad, Jeff?
